Suicide Prevention Bundle - Immersive Room Search

🔎 Background:

A care bundle is a set of interventions that, when used together, significantly improves patient outcomes. At CHOP, one of the care bundles we provide is the Suicide Prevention Bundle (SPB). This care bundle is automatically ordered for patients who are identified as at risk for suicide.

CHOP has seen a 303% increase in patients at risk for suicide/self-harm from 2019-2023. Concurrent with this trend, in FY23, the overall compliance (the percentage of bundles with 100% compliant documentation) of documentation for the SPB across both CHOP campuses was 14.9%. The Joint Commission requires 100% overall compliance in nursing documentation.

The Behavioral Health Team at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia submitted a request to Nursing Professional Development to create education to improve documentation compliance and ensure all staff members are familiar with the SPB and how to support patients ordered for this intervention. This project highlights one of eight modules that were created.

🎯Aims:

  • Demonstrate the correct procedure for searching the patient’s environment in a simulated patient case scenario.

💡 Methods:

An interprofessional team collaborated to design the SPB Education. I created 8 micro-learning modules to help avoid cognitive overload and segment the information in digestible chunks. I used Articulate Rise and Articulate Storyline for the program, but this module utilizes Articulate Storyline so that 360° technology can be incorporated for the most immersive experience.

📊 Results:

The Suicide Prevention Bundle Program has been successfully deployed to ~7,500 staff members across disciplines - Nursing, Behavioral Health Clinicians, and Support Staff Members. Feedback from learners has shown that 95% felt they could immediately apply this education on their next shift, and 98% felt this was a relevant to practice learning experience.

📄 Conclusion:

Learners appreciate relevant, immersive, true-to-practice education that replicates the real environment they work in. Evidence shows this is a best practice that supports adult learning and improves educational outcomes.
